 | Great Book! Jun 11, 2010 |
The Hole in Our Gospel What does God expect of us? That's the tagline of the front cover of this book, written by World Vision president Richard Stearns. In this book, Stearns explores poverty around the world and the injustice we commit as Christians when we are aware of such situations and do nothing about it. Well written and insightful, this book gives a new glimpse into worlds far away and calls us to action in order to bring the "whole gospel" to the world around us. Stearns proposes that when we ignore the rampant sickness, disease, poverty, and war in the world that we present a gospel with a hole in it -- we conveniently forget about the parts where we are commanded to do good, to help our neighbor, to clothe the naked, and feed the hungry.
The personal accounts from the field are both inspirational and touching. I was particularly drawn to the story of a Zambian couple who were given a microloan through World Vision and were able to start and sustain 13 businesses! The book is filled with stories such as these -- where all a person or a family needs is a little help in order to thrive.
Stearns challenges Christians to view themselves properly in light of the rest of the world. He urges us to to be honest about our wealth and to share with others in need. He details his own struggle to give us a prosperous position with Lenox in order to become World Vision's president.
Though the book is well-written and filled with a number of captivating stories, I felt somewhat "bogged down" by it. Perhaps because it was so long. Stearns had one main point -- do justice -- and he reiterated it in a number of different ways, drawing from different Bible passages and real life examples in order to drive the point home. Perhaps this singular point emphasized in many different ways gave the book the feeling of being overly lengthy.
I greatly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in matters of social justice and helping others. I particularly liked the section at the end which gave ideas on how to help right now. Certainly the book ended with a feeling of empowerment and determination, despite the heart-breaking statistics it enclosed. Worth the read!

Richard Stearns was called by God to make a life changing decision. In 1998 he left his position as CEO of Lenox and accepted the position of president at World Vision. This book is much more than Richard's story. It's all of our story. We see him struggle to respond to a call that he was certain he was unequipped for. From that point on, we are drawn into the gospel mandate that God has given all of us. Feed. Heal. Love.
God has been doing a work in me. Perhaps it would be better stated to say that He has been working me over. A Hole in Our Gospel was the nail in my coffin. I learned how to do church safely and give to others safely. That giving often looked radical to others, but God has a grand picture for us to live wildly that we are desperately afraid to lay hold of. I am praying for the faith to pick that vision up and live the crazy abandoned life that God has called us to live. The countless testimonies have been seared into my mind. May this be the definitive moment for me. Read this book and embrace the full power of the gospel on your life. Don't go back to the status quo.

"Are we, like Christ, willing to respond with compassion and urgency to those who suffer? Are we willing? Do we have the kind of faith, the moral courage, the depth of love, and the strength of will to rise up off our padded pews to demonstrate the good news to the world? One way or the other, this will be our defining moment." | | | | Eye opening Jun 8, 2010 |
| I've been sitting in a church pew for almost 30 years and have never heard the gospel presented in this manner. We really have missed it. Challenging and encouraging to live out the REAL gospel we were given, with faith and action. The American church is much too comfortable, we are called to do more, and Stearns tells us all how. | | | | Good title but not so much intriguing. Jun 8, 2010 |
The title itself is very catching. What does the author mean by "Hole" in our gospel? The author of the book is the President of World Vision Richard Sterns. In the beginning of the book, Mr.Sterns talk about how he become the President of WV(World Vision) and how his mind began to develop to help the poors the most effective way. I'm one of the child sponsor for the Compassion International and I also happened to read the book written by the President of the Compassion International. What intrigued me was that the both Presidents had the same vision and ideals when it comes to helping the poor. Both Presidents believe that helping the poor is not about simply donating money here and there but rather giving them a hope and provide the needs for them to start something in their life.
However, as I get to the half of the book, I started to lose an interest to continue to read the book and here's why.
1. The book is too long. It consists of 26 chapters, 1/4 describing how Mr.Sterns came to be the President of WV, and basically, rest of 3/4 of the book describing the problem poverty, different methods to overcome, and what we can do about it. 2. Many things are repeating. It's not literally repeating, but the context itself seems to repeat here and there.
Overall, book is very easy to read and may impact some readers to re-think their mind about global poverty. | | | | Loved it Jun 8, 2010 |
I loved this book. It challenged me from beginning to end. It challenged me to consider what am I going to do with my time and resources and talent in light of God's grace and in light of the overwhelming poverty around the world. It challenged me to think of what the conservative christian's response should be to this poverty and to acknowledge that only preaching the gospel is inadequate. I loved this book. I would recommend it to anyone. Check back with me in 5 years to see its effects. | | | Write your own review about Bktrax-Disc-Hole In Our Gospel (Unabrdg) (8 CD)
