Reviews - What do our customers think?
Fire in the Hole  Oct 19, 2009
In his first offering, Rick Acker introduced us to Ben Corbin, and gave us all a treat with DEAD MAN'S RULE. Now he's ready to give us seconds with an intense sequel in BLOOD BROTHERS! I took my chances, buying both books at once. And I wasn't disappointed. Acker delivered, he got the house rockin', and in the end he came through in style! I like that.

Welcome to a feud between two brothers, Gunnar and Karl Bjornsen. And by the way, Ben Corbin takes the side of Gunnar. And in the world of pharmaticeuticals between these two and a company, it's time to go to war! There is a new drug out on the market, and it makes you stronger and smarter, isn't that great? But is it really a good thing? And to boot, the whole truth isn't being told, things have been covered up. And when Ben and his wife begin to get behind what's really going on, it really gets ugly. And it gets personal.

Huey Lewis and the News talks about, "I want a new drug. One that won't make me sick." I suppose in this case, Mr. Lewis should proceed with caution. Because this does some remarkable things. It also does some destructive things as well.

Rick Acker isn't afraid to walk us through a little fire. But he sets the fire at just the right moment. As for putting it out, well, I won't spoil that one. This has great impact, and some intense stuff. And you know what? The ending is one to remember. An ending that will have me reading the next offering Rick Acker delivers!

Legal Suspense, Biotech Thriller  Apr 8, 2009
Surprise plot twists, courtroom drama, meticulous character development, and intense fast paced action are all indispensable elements in Rick Ackers novels. "Blood Brothers" features, attorney, Ben Corbin matching wits with a successful but sometimes shady attorney, Bert Siwell, in a power struggle between feuding brothers, Karl and Gunnar Bjornsen, founders of the Bjornsen Pharmaceutical Empire. The company is on the threshold of introducing a new revolutionary neural stimulant which increases brain strength and intelligence. The case starts in Chicago centered on the Illinois Trade Secrets Act, moves to Norway, and soon becomes international in scope and intrigue.

In addition to Sergi, Elena, and Ben's wife Noelle, the support team from "Dead Man's Rule" Ackers carefully incorporates a unique pattern of subtlety introducing new characters who play an important part in carrying out the suspense of a complex plot, including: embezzlement, internet drug crimes, black market deals, arson, and violence. I appreciated Acker's attention to detail, clearing up loose ends, and the smooth transitions between scenes. He moved the story line forward while he developed his characters and through the use of stimulating dialog.

Rick consistently focuses on the importance of the core values of honesty, justice, and the worth of the individual. He includes a thread of spiritual interaction woven throughout the story as he shows greed and avarice of contrasted with individual sacrifices, while inspiring hope and faith in the providence God and grace of His forgiveness.

"Blood Brothers" is destined to become another award winning novel for Rick Acker. Rick's creative imagination, gifted communication skills, biotech, and medical research added to his legal training and experience give him an edge, attracting avid readers from multiple genres. Another great read.

Intense  Feb 5, 2009
Reviewed by Carol Hoyer, PhD, for Reader Views (2/09)

From the very first page, the author Rick Acker has you realizing this is a book you can't put down, even if you wanted to. His main characters, brothers Karl and Gunnar, are at each other's throats over a pharmaceutical company they both developed. Karl, now the director, is trying to get his brother to give him the remaining information on a new drug they are developing.

Little known to him, Ben Corbin, a lawyer, has taken on Gunnar's case and finds himself and his wife in grave danger. He is absolutely stunned at the tricks Karl's lawyer takes and the deliberate attempts Karl has taken to get rid of his brother. Readers will come away with a love-hate relationship with the brothers and will remain shocked that one would go to such lengths to get what they wanted.

The author, who is a lawyer, easily describes what goes on in a courtroom including legalities so that readers can completely understand the process. "Blood Brothers" by Rick Acker certainly is a fast-paced novel and one that will keep you in suspense the whole time. The ending of the story will surprise everyone!

A riveting thriller of drugs and business gone bad  Oct 7, 2008
Family is supposed to look out for one another right? "Blood Brothers" is a tale of a business gone exceptionally horrible. Karl and Gunnar Bjornsen made themselves rich with a pharmaceutical empire. With the introduction of a new drug and potential for further profit than either have seen, Lawyer Ben Corbin finds himself stuck between the two. Business turns dirty, far less civil than one would expect between brothers. "Blood Brothers" is a riveting thriller of drugs and business gone bad, a grade-A pick.

A lot to enjoy  Sep 18, 2008
Together Gunnar and Karl Bjornsen built a multimillion dollar pharmaceutical company. However, disagreements between the two brothers resulted in a nasty family feud with Karl eventually forcing Gunner out of the company. When Gunnar left though, he carried in his head the knowledge of how to grow the plant necessary for their new breakthrough, blockbuster drug. Determined to obtain the secret, Karl sues Gunnar for stealing trade secrets from the company and Gunnar countersues claiming Karl is unfit to run the company. Hired by Gunnar, Ben Corbin finds himself in the middle of this tense battle between brothers.

Blood Brothers offers a lot for the reader to enjoy. It has a nice tight plot with some good surprises. While the legal drama is unfolding, there are multiple plots to keep the reader engrossed. From smugglers to good Samaritans, there's no lack of characters and some of them are very surprising.

One of my favorite aspects is the Norwegian history and references to the sagas. It adds a nice depth to the story that's both entertaining and enlightening. While it took a disappointingly minor role in the book, this history really enhanced the overall plot and tied in nicely with the main story.

At the center of Blood Brothers is the question of what is truly important. From the relationship between Sergei and Elena to the motivation behind Noelle's charity work, in a noninvasive way, the reader is routinely confronted with this question. It brilliantly portrays the blessings of positive choices and the consequences irresponsible ones, while not letting the reader forget where our treasures should be stored.
