Item Description... Overview Abortion, adultery, violence-it seems the big sins grab all the headlines. But what about jealousy, selfishness, greed, and "little" faults we live with every day? Opening our eyes to the spiritual dangers of "acceptable" transgressions, Bridges urges us to thoughtfully examine our lives and turn away from subtle behaviors that can drain our Christian growth.
Publishers Description As Christians, we believe that all sins are considered equal in God's eyes. Yet while evangelicals continue to decry the Big Ones--such as abortion, adultery, and violence--we often overlook more deceptive sins. It seems we have created a sliding scale where gossip, jealousy, and selfishness comfortably exist within the church. In short, some sins have simply become acceptable. Acclaimed author Jerry Bridges believes that just as culture has lost the concept of sin, the church faces the same danger. Throughout, Jerry encourages victory over personal sin through the gospel's transforming power. This release is perfect for readers who long to thoughtfully examine their lives and discover a deeper walk with God.

Respectable Sins by Jerry Bridges tackles the issue of sins in the believer's life head on. But this book takes a different approach than you might think when you hear that this is a book about sin. Bridges writes about sins that we find culturally acceptable, the ones that we sweep under the rug. It's easy to point out "big" sins and pontificate about how sad it is that others are struggling with such horrible issues without realizing that we are in fact committing the "acceptable" sins of gossip, pride and judgmentalism. Or how about the sins of envy, jealousy, discontentment, selfishness and worldliness? Not only are these sins acceptable in our consumeristic society, they're practically viewed as a God-given birthright! This book is humbling, and convicting. It calls us to a holistic view of sin, and to the pursuit of holiness.

I believe this book has an important message for all Christians today. I'm not certain what I expected the book to be, but it was not entirely what I expected. The main message of the book is that we in Christianity tolerate sins within ourselves and excuse them with little thought of the impact it has on the reputation of the one whom we represent on this earth and our own eternity.
While reading the book, I often found myself wrestling with the subject. I disagree with the author's premise that `anger' is a sin, but after reading his section on anger I can understand his perspective. I would have appreciated more time spent on the subject of what constitutes `righteous anger'.
I believe the author has tried to present a balanced viewpoint with reliance on faith, prayer and the power of God for transformation. I also believe this is a difficult subject to present without irritating the audience to whom it is presented. The bottom line is that we in Christianity allow ourselves to be in the world and of the world often without thought of whose we are. Even if you find yourself in disagreement with some of the specifics the author has named, you will also be confronted with the need for transformation in every aspect of our lives.
We are commanded to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.... With that goal in mind, this author has tried to challenge our worldly thinking. | | | | Respectable Sins Nov 15, 2009 |
| The title says it all. Christians tolerate "respectable sins" in our own lives while we show concern for the sins of society. We must examine our thoughts and actions in the light of scripture before condemning others. We also must regard sin of any kind seriously because God does. This book examines the specific sins that we tend to overlook or excuse and Jerry Bridges calls us to address our sins using six explicit directions. | | | | Convicting, Yet Encouraging Book Nov 12, 2009 |
I think that Jerry Bridges has quite possibly become one of my very favorite authors. His books are straightforward, coherant, and both thoughtful and thought-provoking. In Respectable Sins, he quotes scripture primarily from the ESV and secondarily from the NIV.
The premise of Respectable Sins is to talk about 1) what sins we tolerate in the church and in our own lives and 2) how to tackle and address those sins in a practical way. His answers for #2 are not pat answers. They are to keep perspective of the gospel and God's grace, to repent, to pray, to go to the Word, and to seek accountability. He urges the reader to seek God in humility and lay our hearts before Him. For God knows what is in our hearts.
Bridges addresses Anger, Pride, Impatience and Irritability, Worldliness and Idolatry, and Ungodliness among the respectable sins that he talks about. I appreciated his definitions of what each of these are. So often we use words and take for granted what they mean instead of really knowing what they mean and defining them. Here is an example:
"Ungodliness may be defined as living one's everyday life with little or no thought of God, or of God's will, or of God's glory, of one's dependence on God."
But, there were several other quotes that I especially enjoyed and this is one of them...
"Our spiritual life may be compared to the motor of an electric appliance. The motor does the actual work, but it is constantly dependent upon the external power source of the electricity to enable it to work. Therefore, we should cultivate an attitude of continual dependence on the Holy Spirit."
I love that picture of the motor and electricity. The motor doesn't run by itself, but it doesn't just wait for the electricity to make everything happen. It needs the electricity--it can't run without it.
This book is very good and I would highly recommend it--it is convicting, yet encouraging at the very same time. Bridges is not condemning in what he says. He is gracious in his tone as he writes--and I think that is one of the thingsthat makes his books so easy for me to read--He speaks the truth in love. | | | | A Needed Read for Nov 10, 2009 |
The very first Christian book I read as a Christ-follower was the Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges that had a shaping role in my relating to God during my college years.
I just completed another one of Bridges' book "Respectable Sins," and the timing of this read could not have been more beneficial. Bridges would define "respectable sins" (and this is my paraphrase) as those sins that are subtle in nature, that are not as bad as the flagrant ones of society like for example murder, stealing, theft and get often dismissed as minor behavioral challenges. Yet no matter what we call them Bridges reminds us is that they are still sin and they need to be addressed for they are more harmful and destructive than we realize. Though he mentions there could be far more exhaustive lists here are some examples of these subtle sins: discontentment, pride, lack of self-control, anger, worldliness etc.
As someone who has been a Christian for over 25 years and has served in vocational Christian ministry for over 15 years - I found this book very convicting and found myself guilty of many these subtle/respectable sins to varied degrees. . I love this quote, "The truth is, there is never a day in our lives when we are so `good' we don't need the gospel."
Now one of the issues that Bridges makes clear is this that the intent of this book is not to condemn or put us in a state of guilt over all of these areas that we fall short in. Instead it is to bring to the light subtle areas of sin in our life that is having a far more damaging effect in our relationship with God and others then we recognize and how to confront them to experience great vitality in our relationship with God and hence others.
I love the way that Bridges gets to the heart or root behind our sinful behavior. For example when we get angry because someone is late in picking us up for a meeting. That does not excuse our work colleague for being late nor does it give us permission to go off the handle and when we really take time examine why we are so angry it often is pride. Pride in the fact that people view us a certain way and that image is being tarnished.
I also appreciated how Bridges, with much candor, addresses how these respectable sins show up in how relate to other churches or Christian organizations and its respective leaders. Very convicting.
One of the great points that he makes is that the Gospel is not for unbelievers but for sinners, whether we are non-believing sinners or believing sinners the power of the Gospel has application in our lives. In fact he also states that we need to preach the Gospel to ourselves daily, a great thought to put into practice.
I hope you will be prodded to read this book. Whether you are seasoned believer whom, I believe will experience a lot of "a-ha" moments as thing are brought to the light or a newer/young believer who can begin to be aware of these sins early on - you will definitely benefit from reading this book.
