Item Description... Overview As her family breaks away from their church district, Nellie is torn between her family and her beloved Caleb, who is staunch in his Old Order beliefs, but if Nellie waits too long to choose, she surely lose him to another.
Publishers Description In The Courtship of Nellie Fisher, Beverly Lewis returns to Lancaster County for a powerful new series based on actual historical events--a heated debate over salvation...and tractors--that causes a group of Amish families to break away from the Old Order. And two young people who are caught in the heartbreaking divide... Passionate and stubborn Nellie Fisher knows that if her family breaks away from their church district, she stands to lose her beloved Caleb, staunch in his Old Order beliefs. But if she follows Caleb, she will lose her dear family. And what of the gentle stirrings she feels when her bishop-uncle speaks of an assurance of salvation her soul longs for? Continuing to meet at the millstream, their secret place, Nellie and Caleb are determined to stay together, although much is at stake for each of them. Caleb risks the coveted land his father promised him--his birthright. And Nellie knows that if she does not soon respond to Caleb's betrothal offer, she will surely lose him to the deacon's daughter, who is ready and willing to do whatever it takes to marry him. Will their families end up on the same side of the division? Or will Nellie and Caleb be forced to part?

 | The Parting (The Courtship of Nellie Fisher) Feb 3, 2010 |
| You can feel the pain the family suffers at the loss of one of their family members. Bevery Lewis takes you into the world of the Amish and you understand their customs and feel their pain when they have difficult decisions to make. She is the best. I just love everything Beverly Lewis writes. I just recently found her as an author and I am trying to find all of the books she has written to "play catch up". I highly recommend her as a Christian romance writer. | | | | Not my favorite Beverly Lewis series Jan 30, 2010 |
| This book, while a quick read and still full of the Amish charm I've come to love from Ms. Lewis, focuses so much more on the religion aspect of Amish life. It is clear that we are supposed to root for the salvation of these characters--almost hoping that they leave the Old Order Amish in favor of salvation in Jesus Christ. While I am a Christian, I'm not sure that this series would be as attractive to the non-Christian reader. | | | | Large print book, The Parting Jan 18, 2010 |
It was a very nice experience finding this book. Large print books are hard to find and I wanted to give a set to a friend. The person I purchased the book from was very prompt in sending the book.
I had a horrible experience trying to order the same book from another seller, they sale went through, but the book was never shipped. I was not charged for the book, but since I wanted it for a gift I needed the book. | | | | The Parting. Oct 6, 2009 |
| Hi, Was very pleased with the 1st book sent but later got about 4 copies of the same book which I have returned. Do not know how the mishap occurred but pray they will be taken off my charge card as they have been returned. Thanks, Colene | | | | I would really give it 4.5 stars if I could... Apr 6, 2009 |
| So, this is the first Beverly Lewis book I've read, and I am going to definitely read more! This book was recommended by a friend, who loves books by this author. The book (the first in a series of 3) is about Nellie Mae Fisher, and Amish girl from Pennsylvania. The book starts out kind of slowly (the second and third books in the series start out more interesting because you already know the background info). The books kind of has to build the characters at the beginning, build the plotlines, and also give you some info about Amish people. The book is about just what it says: the courting of Nellie Mae Fisher. It is interesting to read about the courting (what we "Englishers" call dating) rituals of the Amish (not sure if they've changed as the book was set in the 1960s). Meanwhile, while Nellie Mae is courting during her Rumschpringe ('running around' time, before being baptized into the Amish church) a divide happens among the Amish people in her community. Some start studying the bible (which I guess wasn't allowed by the Amish at this time). There were even parts of the bible that weren't to be read. This causes a great divide in the Amish community with people taking sides and shunning the people who study the bible and claim to be saved. This, in turn, causes some problems for Nellie Mae and her courting. I don't want to give too much away, but it's very interesting to read about something different. It is also interesting to see how some feelings are universal, no matter the culture. Like first love, sadness over not being able to conceive (a side plot in the book, Nellie's friend Rosanna who is unable to conceive), missing a loved one who has died, exploring religion, etc. Beverly Lewis creates characters you care about. Since getting into the first book a few days ago, I've barely been able to put the books (in the series) down. I'm currently on book 3! If you're looking for something a little different and have never read these kind of books before, start here. You will be glad you did. | | | Write your own review about The Parting (Courtship Of Nellie Fisher V1)
