 | After the Leaves Fall is not just ficition, it is poetry. Feb 24, 2010 |
| I was very excited to see this book by a local author while at a coffee shop. One latte later and several pages into it I couldn't wait to get a hold of a copy for myself! Growing up in small town Iowa I found myself relating with Julia but I think anyone who has gone through or is going through adolescence could. No matter what stage a person is in life they will find something that they can identify with in this book. Since reading After the Leaves Fall I have gone on to read all of Nicole's published books and they just keep on getting better. If you have a chance to read any of Nicole's books I highly recommend them. Beautiful writing and great insight make this a fascinating read. | | | | A Must Read! Jan 14, 2010 |
| I picked this book up on a whim at the bookstore and couldn't put it down! Julia's story will make you laugh, cry and realize what is important in life. I even emailed the author (Nicole Baart) because I had to let her know what a wonderful book this was! It was really hard waiting for Summer Snow (I had a countdown going) and loved the resolution -- although I did tell the author that I would LOVE to read more about Julia. I have shared this book with my sisters and friends. As I said in the title -- it is a MUST READ! | | | | Review of After The Leaves Fall Jul 27, 2009 |
Nicole's novel meets the four criteria I use to assess a novel.
1) Her characters and situations are believable. Readers are not left wondering "How could this have happened? Did I miss a twist in the plot?" The story moves and develops in a very credible fashion, even though an unexpected one.
2) Her characters are real. They have a real-life feel about them that you may like or dislike. Unlike some novels where the characters never come alive and you don't care what happens to them, Nicole's characters draw you into their personal dramas and crises.
3) Her book beckons you to keep reading. When you are not reading it you are thinking of the characters and wondering how the plot will unfold.
4) The story line of After The Leaves Fall is bigger than the book itself. It addresses the pressures and tensions that teenagers and their families face. Teenagers will enjoy the story and parents will appreciate the door Nicole opens for them to discuss pertinent issues together.
I highly recommend the After The Leaves Fall. WB | | | | Great Book!! Jun 29, 2009 |
| I loved this book. Many young adults will be able to relate to the main character Julia the struggles she goes through. This book truly is the best book I have read in a long time. As soon as I finished it I had to order the sequel. | | | | Challenging and makes you think Dec 26, 2008 |
Review by Gigi Hoffman
Julia DeSmit hasn't had the easiest life. Her mother deserted her when she was nine and her father died when she was fifteen. The only people left are Thomas, her best friend and first love, and her loving grandmother. But when Thomas falls for someone else, leaving Julia with a broken heart, she decides to get away and discover the real world by going to college.
College seems like a great escape and a new beginning, but it's not all it was cracked up to be. Classes are harder than she expected and she's tested by people, situations, and expectations. When a bad decision unexpectedly changes her life, Julia ends up back at her grandmother's farm, utterly defeated. With her grandmother's kind, gentle nature, Julia learns of hope and what starting over is really like.
This book is challenging and makes you think; it wasn't a fairy tale, happily-ever-after kind of story. Ms. Baart makes Julia such a real character. Julia was evidence that sometimes we make mistakes, get hurt, and everything doesn't always work out, but good things can still come from the bad. I enjoyed this thoroughly. Definitely check it out!
